Physical Description

“I may lift my helmet, if you’d prefer to see me directly.”

Garen stands rather short compared to a lot of other men, though often keeps a professional and attentive posture at all times. Across his body would be various scars and markings from battles previous, though he tends to cover this up with traditional Ascalonian plating, as well as a few newer pieces he has discovered in his time. His body would be well built, and his strength is not to be taken lightly. He speaks in a very notable accent which gives a deep impression to his descent, though often understands fully well most traditional colloquialisms at this point. His hair is a natural dark black, which is often groomed.

Known History

“There are many tales of me to tell… Which would you like to hear?”

Garen Volkyr was not born of the modern era, and actually hails from the land of Old Ascalon many years prior. He was born within the year 1060 AE in Ascalon City, where he studied the art of military and strategy similarly to his father, who served time on the Great Ascalonian Wall. He made a collective group of friends; Marx, a rogue inducted into the army for his notable skills; Xander, a rather rich noble who spent his time and wealth hitting on as many girls as he could find; Dyanne, a mesmer who also later helped serve; Carrion, a ranger who was often notably clumsy and picked on quite often; and Abigail, a powerful monk and healer whom Garen eventually fell in love with as they would grow up together.

Eventually the Searing would strike in 1070 AE, where Garen firsthand saw the Searing tear apart the city of Rin on a business trip, destroying the Great Wall his dad worked within, as well as massacre of the village below. His mother, thinking him to have been killed as well, retreated with Prince Rurik to the Shiverpeaks… unknowingly carrying a child with her. This tore things up around Garen’s life, and he saw his friends change along with the now battle-torn environment. Within his time he served under one of the Ascalon Guard’s special units due to his exceptional devotion to studies, and protected people of importance within combat. Despite originally wielding no form of magic, he was cited for his incredible defensive capabilities, cutting down opponents before they could reach the target. He was eventually appointed to his thought to be forgotten friend Abigail, and served with her for many months and years to come after a certain incident brought them closer together. Soon, they fell in love with one another, and both thought their lovewould never end.

That was anything but true… when in 1090 AE a failed recon mission saw his friend Marx killed and the man & his lover blamed for his murder and conspiracy with the charr. After having no other choice but to defend themselves, Abigail and Garen spent two days in the vicious battlefield hiding away, killing who were once their own brethren when they had to. After an assault from a group of charr kept the two lovers trapped in a cave-in, Garen worked tirelessly to dig his way out while Abigail shone a light to help him. And as the light of dawn finally crept through one of the cracks, Abigail succumbed to her wounds.

A broken and distraught Garen sought his way to the Shiverpeaks, having said to have “walked across the entirety of the war-torn Ascalon without having raised his weapon once, before collapsing in the snow of the Shiverpeaks” where he was later found and brought back to Ascalon City to stand witness. It was the (now maddened) King Adelburn himself who wanted the man to pay for his crimes, ordering him locked away in the Catacombs to suffer with a mixture of chronomancy and a curse, so that he would forever feel constant torture and pain to pay for his crimes.

However, his remaining friends had a different plan. After setting the exhausted Garen into a coffin, Dyanne and Carrion revealed themselves to the man just as the charr broke through the city walls. Dyanne set a chronomancy spell over the knight as her now current lover Carrion fought against the charr now entering the catacombs. The last thing Garen saw before being sealed away to live on another day was the bodies of both his friends fall over, and his friend using the last of her strength to seal the coffin away for a long, long time…

Eventually, in 1330 AE, several hundred years after the fall of Ascalon, Garen was found within the same coffin. Where to him it felt like mere seconds, his time in stasis shocked him as he learned the truth, for a long time resenting a lot of people as he got back to the Refuge. After nearly crumbling into insanity, friends and allies, as well as a special woman he holds dear known as Emily Belmonte helped to rescue him. He then became a part of the Refuge entirely, establishing himself as an enforcer to live onward. And once more, he found true love in his life that he’s determined in stalwart fashion to keep safe with the priestess Emily. Though he has been tried and tested many times since then, he still stands even now, determined to protect those he trusts.

Recently, Garen has been inflicted by a curse following the failed Sunspear assault on Palawadan. This has caused him to grow sickly and weak in conjunction with heavy wounds sustained from the battle. He has taken a long break from his duties as a result and is in the process of a slow recovery. There are visible signs of scarring over the right side of the man’s body, and patches of his own hair have been lost.

Since this incident, the man has gone through many months of recovery, eventually finding his footing back in life and recovering his older features with the mending of time.

Garen has also recently announced of his engagement to Emily Belmonte after the House Aches reclaimed their estate, in the presence of a thousand other various people to hear his word.
